Montgomery College, Health Sciences department has need for a full-time:
Learning Skills Support Specialist.
Work schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00p.m. May include occasional evenings or weekends
depending on the needs of the department.
Job Summary
:
The position is responsible for supporting student success and persistence to goal completion. Students served are primarily in the health science programs. Pre-nursing and other pre-health science studen! ts are the focus of this position. Duties include, but are not! limited to, the following:
Assess student’s academic and skill development needs, and other related support service needs
Provide training and guidance to develop academic and personal success skills in a variety of topics in individual or small group sessions (e.g. study and learning strategies, test-taking skills, organizational skills, time management)
Design and provide training activities relevant to individual student needs
Perform in-depth review with students of their performance on exams and relevant test skills remediation
Design, conduct and evaluate workshops that teach academic and personal success skills.
Design, create, print and managed distribution of relevant publications and materials
Provide counseling and guidance to solve problems interfering with academic persistence and success
Participate in various success task forces, committees, APPEL Corps (College-wide support centers ne! twork) and initiatives
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, College Student Personnel, Education, or related field.
Five years of work experience in collegiate counseling and / or academic advising.
Experience in teaching or training and counseling
Experience working with adults and /or college students and with a diverse population
Knowledge of academic and personal success theory practice, and skills (e.g. time management, effective textbook use, note taking, study strategies, test-taking strategies, task analysis, organizational skills, short and long term goal setting etc.)
Knowledge of education theory and instructional techniques
Knowledge of counseling theory and procedures
Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite applications and Internet
Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United State! s and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qual! ifications:
Ability to accurately assess learning needs, identify responsive learning objective, design materials and activities, and structure them into a variety of formants
Ability to provide counseling services concerning academic, student development and personal issues
Ability to perform task analysis and subsequent sequential planning, with interim and final deadlines
Ability to create, use, and maintain a clear and accurate system of information regarding students served and services provided
Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing work environment.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with frequent interruptions
Excellent oral, written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal and decision making skills.
Experience working with a diverse population
Experience working with community college students.
