Overview:
Purpose Statement/Position Summary

The Georgia lab (https://www.chla.org/research/georgia-laboratory) is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Manager for our research group. This position will require a background with strong project management, organization and interpersonal skills who is enthusiastic and able to take initiative. This individual will work closely with the principal investigator and will be the primary contact for research administrative and lab management functions. This job requires performing lab functions such as ordering and receiving, maintaining lab protocols for biological and chemical safety, routine equipment maintenance, and additional responsibilities as assigned. The laboratory manager will manage the research laboratory spaces on a day-to-day basis. The laboratory manager will organize and maintain the laboratory spaces, execute assigned projects, and manage trainee onboarding and training. The Laboratory manager will also provide guidance, technical expertise and make recommendations for lab improvements. The laboratory is conducting high quality research and requires the Laboratory manager to review and write SOPs, assist with regulatory approvals, and ensure all experiments are logged properly in a laboratory notebook.

Excellent communication and organization skills are a must. The ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, work effectively in a diverse team with scientists, professionals, administrators, and support personnel is essential. This individual must have effective communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility. The ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, is essential to this job. This individual must have excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including the ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.

Job Accountabilities:
  • Manage and maintain BSL2+ laboratories and inventory
  • Assist with and supervise various lab projects
  • Teach and support various levels of trainees with lab techniques
  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigators to oversee scientific management of the research laboratory including projects utilizing various model systems
  • Experience in developing, organizing, and tracking projects and coordinating complex activities. Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail, and to take ownership of work performance, follow through on assignments, and anticipate, identify, and analyze situations and seek solutions.
  • Experience using computer and data management skills and the ability to take mentorship and guidance in improving these skills. Experience with computer programs such as Excel, Word, and Power Point, Graphpad prism and other software
  • Experience with statistical analyses to evaluate research hypotheses and to manage data quality and integrity. Ability contribute to manuscript preparation and grant writing where it relates specifically to assigned project(s).
  • Facilitate effective communication across internal departments (facilities, finance and IT) and vendors.
  • Order lab supplies and work with grants administrator to track laboratory spending on grants.
  • Maintain lab supplies, purchases, and related records. Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, budgets, and maintenance schedules
  • Establish and improve procedures and processes by addressing issues and risks
  • Ensure high quality standards in the laboratory by establishing and maintaining SOPs and routine maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain records of attendance at regulatory/training sessions.
  • Maintain equipment service calls, contracts, and forms.
  • Track laboratory derived data and results.


Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience


Minimum Education: BA/BS in a science related discipline


Minimum Field of Expertise
: Experience in good laboratory practices, laboratory and inventory organization experience and documentation skills and wet lab and technical bench knowledge.

Preferred Education: Master’s degree in a science related discipline

Preferred Experience: 5 years’ work experience in laboratory management in an wet-bench research laboratory.

Preferred Field of Expertise: Strong problem-solving, training, team building, and mentoring abilities. Experience with laboratory workflows and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Education/Licensure/Certification

MS+ in molecular biology preferred or equivalent combination of related education and experience. Excellent communication and organization skills are a must. The ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, work effectively in a diverse team with scientists, professionals, administrators, and support personnel is essential.

Pay Scale Information: USD $52,208.00 - USD $94,099.20

Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
