This position is located in the Infectious Disease clinics in Ambulatory Care Services, Nursing & Patient Care Services at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center, in the Department of Health and Human Services. The Clinical Research (CRN) partners with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in providing direct care to research participants.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Clinical Center (CC), is the 240-bed research hospital and ambulatory care research facility in Bethesda, Maryland that supports the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institutes of Health. It is the largest inpatient facility in the country devoted exclusively to clinical research, and provides a full range of services from ambulatory care to critical care and special procedures. If you are selected for this position your r! esponsibilities will include:
- Exercise the full domain of practice for the specialty of clinical research nursing including providing clinical care to research participants, supporting protocol implementation, data collection, continuity of care, human subjectÂ's protection and dissemination of clinical research findings. Utilize advanced critical thinking and nursing skills to assess, plan, perform, and evaluate nursing care for individual patients, their families and significant others, who are participants in biomedical research protocols. Care requirements are determined by the scope of study participation, the clinical condition of the patient and the requirements and clinical effects of research procedures. The impact of the research process on patient care is identified and communicated. Interventions adjusted based on findings, and issues/variances reported promptly to the research team. Evidence-based practice is incorporated into nursing practice! .
- Support biomedical research through detailed observation, me! asurement, and accurate data collection related to pertinent assessment as defined by the protocol specifications and the nurseÂ's clinical judgment. Accurately document observations, identify trends and important findings, and effectively communicate this information to the multidisciplinary research team and nursing colleagues. Provide feedback to colleagues and investigators on all issues affecting the quality of the research endeavor, assist less-experienced nurses in learning the specifics of studies or protocols, evaluate patient trends in outcomes and compliance, and contribute to the design of clinical trials.
- Provide patient-focused nursing leadership within the interdisciplinary team and collaborate with team members to create and communicate a plan of care that balances clinical care needs with research needs and allows for safe and effective collection of clinical research data. Contribute to multidisciplinary conferences and activities regarding resear! ch participant care and protocol implementation. Delegate, guide and coordinate the work of nursing staff and support personnel.

o Point of Care Testing
o Administer and monitor Biotherapy Treatments
o Assist NIAID research team members with lumbar punctures, knee aspirations, and other procedures as needed
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
AND
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT
Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approv! ed nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appoint! ed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.
AND
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Government. Examples of qualifying experience include: Providing comprehensive nursing care to patients based on the physician's medical care plan and the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient; administering oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusions and prescribed oral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications; managing nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes; making nursing care assignments to various skill levels of professional and nonprofessional personnel; preparing patients for surgical and/or diagnostic procedures; ob! serving post-operative and seriously ill patients as well as those under therapy for adverse conditions and reactions; setting-up, operating and monitoring specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, respirators, defibrillators, etc.
OR
PH.D or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education
OR
A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
