Primary responsibilities are (a) the administration of intravenous, inhalation and other anesthetics to patients in an operating room and (b) observing the physiological condition of patients while under anesthesi! a. In conjunction with these primary responsibilities (a) evaluates each assigned patient’s physical state and plans the course of anesthesia, (b) obtains, assembles, operates, and/ or monitors anesthesia equipment and (c) ensures that all necessary supplies, drugs and anesthetic agents are available.
Will administer anesthetics in collaboration with an attending anesthesiologist, who is physically present in the hospital at all times. Such administration of anesthetics involves the diagnosis and treatment of acute moment-to-moment changes in a patient’s condition modified by acute effects of surgery, anesthesia, and the patient’s ongoing medical problems.
Perform and document pre-operative assessments and evaluation to include requesting consultation, diagnostic studies, ordering and administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids and obtaining informed consent. Developing and implementing an anesthetic plan which may include general, regional, ! combined, local, and sedation techniques. Selecting, applying ! and inserting appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring devices for continuous evaluation of the patient’s physical status. Selecting and administering anesthetics, adjuncts and accessory drugs and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic. Manage the patient’s airway and pulmonary status using current practice modalities. Facilitating emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilatory support. Discharging the patient from a post-anesthesia care area and providing post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care. Implementing acute and chronic pain management modalities. Clinical / Administrative oversight of other departments( i.e. PACU)
The CRNA will assume responsibility for preparation of any case that they are assigned. This includes preparation of the facility in which the anesthetic is to be delivered (i.e. machine check, intravenous fluids, fluid warmers, emergency drugs, ! etc.). Ensure blood and other necessary “special†requirements are readily available for the procedure (i.e. mannitol).
Ensure that a pre-operative evaluation is complete prior to a schedule surgery, to include proper cardiovascular and pulmonary clearance for at risk patient. Consult with the faculty anesthesiologist supervising the case prior to patient arrival in the operating room to discuss the anesthetic plan. In the event that a SRNA is working with the anesthesia team the SRNA will contact the CRNA they are assigned with the night before surgery to discuss the case assignments. Plan will be a collaborative agreement between the anesthesia team members.
Ensure that the patient is properly consented and understands the anesthetic plan. Will assume responsibility for patient identification, and surgical site identification (“the time outâ€) in the absence of the anesthesiologist. Will implement the anesthetic plan and make changes based upon ph! ysiologic or surgical alterations. To include the implementation of inv! asive monitoring. Will update the attending anesthesiologist of any critical changes in the case of patient physical status. Manage emergence of anesthesia and transport the patient to the appropriate recovery area in accordance with departmental and hospital policy (PACU, ICU). Provide a thorough report to the receiving unit and when necessary to the physician responsible for patient care, prior to transferring patient care, and responsibility to the receiving unit.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree required. Must be certified by the American Associate of Nurse Anesthetists or in the process of acquiring such certification. Current Maryland State RN and CRNA licensure required. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
