SUMMARY: The Staff Occupational Therapist is ! responsible for evaluating, planning, directing and administering occupational therapy modalities of treatment as prescribed by a referring physician in an effort to restore function and prevent disability following injury, disease, or physical disability. The occupational therapist assists patients to reach their maximum performance and level of function while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.

The staff therapist coordinates, delegates, and supervises responsibilities assigned to support staff. The staff therapist participates in operational aspects of the department, maintains performance improvement activities within the department, and participates in performance improvement activities. Accurate and timely entry of patient documentation and charges is an expectation of all staff therapists. The individual participates in all infection control practice, departmental equipment training, annual organizational training, and safety programs. !

The Staff Occupational Therapist has programmatic res! ponsibilities while carrying a full patient caseload to provide direct patient care within the scope of occupational therapy practice. Programmatic responsibility may include but is not limited to: clinic attendance, hospital staff education, coordination of volunteers, program development, student group leadership, coordination of student programs, quality assurance, and patient education programs. This individual serves as a mentor for students and staff as requested.

Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status. Interprets appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs and provides care needed as described in the department’s policies/procedures.

Works in conjunction with MD’s nurses, therapists, technicians, care managers, social workers, and other disciplines to as! sure a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and patient family education. Possesses a wide range of knowledge and judgment regarding policies, protocols, and regulations applying that knowledge to ensure the smooth flow of information to and from the department.

Collaborates with other occupational therapists. Supervises occupational therapy assistants, rehabilitation technicians, and students. Participates in orientation training for new Rehabilitation Services employees.

Communication skills are required to persuade or gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas. Responsibility exists to ensure that internal customers are satisfied with service. Communication with external contacts is for providing or receiving factual information. Courtesy and tact are required in dealing with customers.

Carries out responsibilities in accordance with Ascension Health Core Values, St. Agnes policies/ procedures and applicable civil laws. Is accountable for e! fficient use of resources and support of the St. Agnes mission.
Essential functions :
â€" Assesses, evaluates, and documents patient response to treatment, measuring progress for revision of plan or discharge as appropriate.

â€" Documents according to professional standards as well as department, regulatory, and reimbursement requirements

â€" Attends departmental and team meetings regularly and/or reviews and is accountable for staff meeting minutes

â€" Completes annual mandatory training in accordance with department and hospital policy

â€" Completes continuing education as required by the Maryland State Board of Occupational Therapy Practice

â€" Evaluates proper functioning of exercise and monitoring equipment and initiates repair calls

â€" Provides clinical coverage for weekends and holidays as requested

â€" Participates in departmental education and program development

â€" Provides administrative coverage in absence of Team Leader as assigned
â€" Provides clinical and/or administrative coverage for Practice Leader as assigned

â€" Identifies areas of high risk and need for education in areas of clinical skills and safety

â€" Recommends, obtains approval, and carries out special projects

â€" Actively involved in at least one quality assurance process, reporting data on a regular basis

â€" Effectively communicates and actively participates in committees and groups.

â€" Fosters skills improvement in others

â€" Promotes departmental programs to customers.

General duties:
â€" Consistently and independently follows established safety and infection control procedures. Intervenes in unsafe situations.

â€" Complies with the standards of conduct and Corporate Responsibility Program and seeks guidance when in doubt.

â€" Meets or exceeds expectations of individuals for whom service is provided.

â€" Participates on interdep! artmental, hospital and departmental committees as appropriate.
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in Occupational Therapy from four year college or university.

Preferred Education: Advanced continuing education training in one or more areas of clinical expertise.

Required Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Current Maryland Occupational Therapist license and current CPR certification from the American Heart Association (Healthcare Provider card) (BCLS or BLS) or the American Red Cross (CPR-AED for Healthcare Provider card).

Preferred Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Certification in advanced area of practice .

Required Experience: Less than one year in rehabilitation healthcare.

Preferred Experience: One year experience in acute care and/or outpatient rehabilitation practice. Experience in all programmatic areas of SAH Rehabilitation Department practice.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no su! pervisory responsibilities.
