Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
These positions are to provide direct and indirect care to patients within the psychiatric care units at the VA Maryland Healthcare System (VAMHCS). The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant duties are listed below:

  • Performs a very wide range of patient personal care, treatment and charting duties on a regular and continuing basis;
  • Provides input to the Registered Nurse (RN) for charting patientsÂ' physical and emotional progress;
  • Participates in the admission of patients to the unit, checking patient or contraband, orienting and helping patients to feel mo! re comfortable;
  • Takes and records vital signs;
  • Collec! ts and delivers specimens;
  • Provides supportive assistance for the Â"special PrecautionÂ" therapeutic mode by maintaining contact with the patient, relative to their status;
  • Performs direct patient care treatments such as foot soaks, non sterile dressing changes under the supervision of an RN;
  • Encourages and assists patients in activities of daily living;
  • Assists treatment team with patients when using a variety of treatment procedures in groups (reality orientation, small group therapy) or individually (one-to-one therapy) to explore their behavior;
  • Works with other disciplines in developing a plan of care by attending and participating in Treatment Planning Conferences. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position requires light t! o heavy liting and carrying (15 pounds - 45 pounds and over), pushing (2 hours), reaching above shoulder, walking (5 hours), standing (3 hours), repeated bending (2 hours), use of fingers and both hands, reaching above the shoulder. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Depth perception, and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shade of colors. Hearing (aid permitted).

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes
nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing
home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as

that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

equipment, materials, and supplies in a large variety of diagnostic and
treatment procedures for the purpose of understanding and carrying out assigned
instructions

Observe the patient's physical and
emotional reactions to hospital care and treatments for the purpose of
communicating with the nursing and medical staff and making notations in the
patient's record

·
Sufficiently understand human body
structure, function, illnesses and diseases, the treatment procedures, the
supporting patient charting and teaching, and the goals for assigned patients
for the purpose of communicating with nurses, patients and supporting medical
staff

Work consistently with personal
nursing care, diagnostic support, therapeutic treatment, patient charting, and
patient teaching duties. The employee recognizes the differences between
patients (for example some patients may need more self-ca! re than others) and
varies the nursing care accordingly

intervention in emergencies such as cardiac arrest, obstructed airway,
disruptive behavior and others

Perform and document ! complex
nursing procedures, such as feeding by gavage or gastrostomy, care of
colostomies, external trachesotomy care

Engage in group activities such as
off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic
groups

·
Set up patient care related
equipment, such as hypothermia machines, oxygen delivery systems, portable and
wall suction and assisting in monitoring proper functioning of equipment.

Safeguard the patientÂ's privacy by
judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature

Requires one year of
specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4, see
above) OR successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high
school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation OR
equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school
education (beyond the second year! ) and specialized experience may be used to

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes

for the purpose of establishing more acceptable approaches to daily living.
