The Lactation Consultant (LC) will:
- Provide direct lactation care and instruction to breastfeeding mothers and infants.
- Perform initial and on-goi ng assessments of the patient's lactation goals and issues.
- Maintain knowledge of current lactation theories and research and applies them to maintain a practice environment that consistently supports the success of women who choose to breastfeed.
- Develop evidence-based feeding plans that address the mother and infant's feeding issues.
- Provide education to staff in direct patient care so they can consistently & effectively intervene to facilitate breastfeeding.
- Provide consultation to nurses, physicians and other caregivers working with women who may choose to breastfeed including but not limited to staff from L&D, NICU, MBU, Pediatrics, ED & Pediatric ED.
- Document in the medical record according to the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) documentation guidelines.
- Provide follow up support in the form of phone calls and return visits to mothers who choose to breastfeed.
- Promote breastfee ding beyond the first few weeks and assist mothers to meet their personal breast-feeding goals.
- RN from an accredited registered nursing program, BSN strongly preferred, or agreement to enroll within six months of hire.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Maryland.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred.
- Certified Lactation Counselor or Certified Lactation Specialist required.
- 5 years current clinical experience in perinatal care.
