JOB SUMMARY: The Emergency Department Technician supports the direct care of the patients, families and visitors during an “episode of care.†Responsibilities include direct care (vital signs, venipuncture, I&O’S), indirect care (MD exam assistance, stocking and transportation) and customer service (such as warmth, support and food). The individual in the role may also answer phones or perform order entry in the computer or any other tasks such as requested by nursing staff but are within the scope of their job description/role. Each individual is also responsible for the success of a shift and support of peers and other team members. Every team member is responsible for the financial success of the unit/organization and minimum requirements for delivery of quality care and services. Work requires occasional communication outside of the work group. Communication with external contacts is for providing or receiving factual information. Courtesy and tact are required in dealing with customers.
Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with Ascension Health Core Values and St. Agnes policies/ procedures and applicable civil laws, and individual is accountable for efficient use of resources and support of the St. Agnes mission.
Essential functions:
1. Performs the following complex procedures in caring for pediatric, adult and geriatric frail/elderly patients:
A. Blood drawing
B. BCBGM and QA testing as appropriate
C. Applies sterile cold saline soaks to burns
D. Performs EKGs, labels appropriately, notifies RN or MD, has RN or MD document notification
E. Set-up, insert and discontinue IVs
F. Insertion and removal of foley catheters; obtains urine from catheters
G. Maintain incentive spirometry
H. Apply and adjust oxygen
I. Set-up and clean sterile trays; uses disposable trays as appropriate
J. Provide eye irrigation
K. Applies sterile dressings
L. Specialty specific procedures like teaching crutch walking
2. Uses equipment correctly as identified in the Nursing Technician/Student Nurse orientation Procedure checklist.
3. Ensures a safe, therapeutic environment for pediatric, adult and geriatric frail/elderly patients by:
Orienting patients to location and use of call lights and side rails Keeping patient’s surrounding neat Cleaning equipment Cleaning medicine room, utility room and kitchen Reporting broken equipment Storing equipment properly Proper mobility/transfer, support to and from chairs, wheelchairs, stretchers or bedside commodes
4. Interacts in a professional manner with patients/families of all ages using basic principles of effective communication. Provides emotional support and mental stimulation to patients/families appropriate to their age.
5. Sets priorities in completing assignment; may need to determine priorities with Charge Nurse/ Clinical Unit Coordina to r.
6. Provides assistance to the pediatric, adult and geriatric frail/elderly patient:
Ensures that hygiene and comfort needs are met Makes occupied and unoccupied beds Assists with restraining patients as needed Provides nourishment as needed Helps patients on and off of the bedpan Records intake and output when ordered Takes vital signs as ordered Rounds hourly to meet patient care needs
7. Documents patient care given on appropriate flow sheets per policy.
8. Works cooperatively as a team member by:
Helping other team members Running errands Transportation of patients Is supportive of peers and deals with differences of opinion in a constructive way 9. Communicates the necessary information to the Nurse caring for the patient by:
Informing them of changes in vital signs or sensorium Informing them of patient needs, complaints or other problems Responds quickly to patients call lights. 10. Maintains confidentiality of patients and their information. Responsible for managing patient belongings.
11. Applies concepts of good customer relations in all interactions with patients, families and co-workers.
12. May assist with orientation of new employees and volunteers.
13. Responsible for contributing to the financial success of the unit/organization through the efficient use of supplies. Responsible for appropriately identifying charge items/level of care. Is responsible for working with individual nurses/Team Leaders to identify charges that have not been captured.
14. Responsible for maintaining individual annual requirements such as Corporate Responsibility, Fire, Safety and additional requirements necessary in the Emergency Department. Example: EMTALA, COBRA, TB testing.
15. Facilitates Emergency Department patient flow through use of Electronic Documentation systems. Supports patient flow by bringing patients to the treatment area, preparing and setting up for exam by RN, MD or Midlevel Provider. Is able to support the Emergency Department in the event of a disaster as outlined by policy and at discretion of the Clinical Unit Coordina to r or Charge Nurse.
16. Responsible for being cross trained in all clinical areas, including Triage, Chest Pain, Adult, Urgent Care and Pediatrics. Is also expected to support quick registration.
17. Responsible for contributing to the success of the unit and organization through process improvements and other initiatives that support quality patient care.
18. Responsible for contributing to the overall morale in the Emergency Department through team effort and positive attitude.
19. Responsible for being informed about unit activities through staff meetings and minutes. Knowledge of unit based communication system and expectations of unit scheduling committee.
20. Encourages the success of the unit by contributing to the environment, managing equipment correctly and prompt equipment repair, etc. Uses checklists to support smooth running of the department for the next shifts.
