Emergency Medicine Medical Directorship Reports to: Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer, Emergency Medicine Network; secondary reporting relationship to Vice President Medical Affairs,of the Health System
Responsibilities:
Personnel:
Ensures appropriate staffing and coordination of Emergency Department balancing quality, efficiency, and financial responsibility
> Participates in recruitment by interviewing and evaluating candidates Personnel management including evaluating, counseling, hiring, firing
Evaluates physician performance and implements corrective action
Ensures publication of the Emergency Physicians' schedule at least a month in advance covering all shifts
Clinical coverage: Continually assesses coverage patterns at all clinical sites considering volume, acuity, seasonality, and revenue. Recommends adjustment in shifts, provider mix, and hours of coverage based on these parameters.
Quality/Peer Review:
Recommends to the medical staff the criteria for Clinical Privileges for Emergency Department physicians and nurse practitioners
Actively participates in hospital risk management/peer review process Reviews all cases involving emergency department care referred by risk management
ED Clinical Operations: Interfaces with nursing With nurse managers and site directors, develops and updates policies and procedures consistent with regulatory authorities and guided by evidence-based principles
Sets and updates standards for quality and patient safety
Satisfaction Parameters Evaluates current patient/medical staff satisfaction and implements plan for continual improvement
Chairs physician staff meetings on a regular basis (at least 8 per year) including writing and disseminating minutes
Represents or assigns designee to represent the emergency department on key hospital committees including MEC, Credentials, P&T, Quality. Ensures emergency physician representation on all appropriate hospital committees and work groups.
Collaborates and maintains excellent working relationships with other departments and the health system administration.
Coordinates agenda and report for quarterly meetings with the health system administration in conjunction with UMEMN CMO and senior financial analyst.
Maintains state of the art clinical programs and equipment including: Pediatric EM Trauma care Ultrasound Procedural Sedation STEMI Stroke Sepsis
Maintains policies/procedures for subspecialty backup with special attention to trauma, hand, neurosurgery, maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, uninsured patients
Promotes education through, but not limited to: research, clinical updates, QA reviews and internet-based forums.
Finances:
Collaborates and communicates with UMEMN CMO to maintain a balanced professional budget for Bon Secours faculty practice
Works 800 clinical hours per year.

Education and Experience
Education: Medical education and training at institutions of high repute; Board certification in Emergency Medicine; Business/Management degree preferred; Evidence of ongoing leadership/management education; Commitment to a physician executive career.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of active Emergency Medicine clinical practice post residency with reputation as an excellent clinician
Minimum of 3 years of experience at the Director or Assistant Director level of a moderate to high acuity emergency department
Experience with implementation of an EDIS and familiarity with biomedical informatics is desirable

Expectations:
Assessment of current physician group will be completed with attention to quality, productivity, and interpersonal skills. Decisions will be made and implemented about performance improvement initiatives or replacement of underperforming physicians. Ongoing process for recruiting outstanding residency trained emergency physicians to replace underperforming physicians and cover freestanding ED will be established
There will be measurable improvement in administration and medical staff satisfaction with performance of the physician group.
Minimum 10% improvement on Quality Metrics
