What You Will Do:
This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC who have greater than 12 months experience. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effecti! ve and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient c! are services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Clinical Practice/Care Delivery

1. Competent in care of unit specific patient population; independently practices with solid knowledge and clinical skills; e! ngaged in advancing own practice.

2. Serves as Clinical Resource for others.

3. Utilizes and integrates evidence into practice.

4. Functions effectively in roles specific to unit, such as arrest team for ICU, triage for ED, etc).

5. Serves as an effective Primary Coordinating Nurse; collaborates with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs.

Practice Focus Areas:
A. Active participant in unit based Clinical Practice governance activities.

B. Assists in team developing/evaluating RBC and suggesting methods for improvement.

C. Develops patient education materials and overall process for unit based patient education.

D. Assists in the development of clinical practice protocols and standards for unit.

Professional Development

1. Responsible for maintaining competencies required for the patient care setting; focus on advancing own profess! ional development.

2. Attends educational offerings and in-ser! vices independently.

3. Serves as preceptor, coach, mentor to new nurses, students.

4. Contributes to ancillary personnel skills and development.

Practice Focus Areas:
A. Active participant in unit based Professional Development governance activities.

B. Contributes to unit based education and learning activities (2/year that could be posters, storyboards, presentation, in-service, group project).

C. Assists with developing/evaluating unit based orientation program.

D. Serves as Super-user or assists in competency validation.

E. Provides health-related contributions through community services, such as health fairs.

Service Quality/Safety

1. Models customer service behaviors; supports “Best Practices” for customer service; learning service recovery skills.

2. Participates in implementation efforts addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).

3. Partici! pates in unit based process improvement (PI) efforts; assists in development of action plans and supports implementation.

4. Participates in some or all elements of research.

Practice Focus Areas:
A. Active participant in unit based Process Improvement governance activities.

B. Collects patient/family satisfaction data; assists with tracking and developing action plans for improvement.

C. Participates in collection of data related to RBC outcomes, e.g. hand offs, medication safety, etc.

D. Participates in unit based research activities and/or research council or team.

E. Assists with TJC readiness.

Unit Operations

1. Performs charge role for assigned shifts as needed; supports charge nurse decisions.

2. Participates in teambuilding efforts on units; supports and models teamwork.

3. Fully participates in unit level governance.

4. Accountable for compliance with regul! atory requirements and holds others accountable.

5. Participat! es and supports the AACN guidelines for Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, effective decision making, recognition, leadership, staffing).

Practice Focus Areas:
A. Runs charge on more consistent basis (in areas without permanent charge nurse role).

B. Participates in unit based Reward and Recognition activities.

C. Leads efforts that support unit operations such as equipment maintenance, scheduling, etc.

D. Orients RN I to unit level governance structure and councils.

E. Contributes to development of unit based peer review processes; actively participates in individual peer review feedback.

F. Identifies areas impacting unit operations and assists in developing/implementing action plans.

G. Participates as member of a team focusing on elements within the Healthy Work Environment.

Working Conditions

1. Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be requ! ired.

2. Work requires maximum lifting weight of 35 lbs when participating in patient care tasks up to 50% of the time to position and/or assist patients on to carts or into wheelchairs or beds, and generally, with ambulation. Work requires standing and/or walking for up to 100% of scheduled work time; maximum lifting weight of 50 lbs when lifting equipment and supplies.

3. There is potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases requiring observance of universal precautions requiring wearing protective clothing, gloves, and mask as appropriate, and observance of safe work practices.

V. Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

3. Im! plements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the perform! ance of assigned duties.

4. Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.
