Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking full-time, term position (3 year) experienced field rese! archer for the Ohio/Western PA area for a national bereavement study investigating the impact of a United Slates (U.S.) service member's death on military family survivors. This national study considers the distinctive characteristics of military death and identifies the different experiences of family members as individuals (spouse, parent and children) and as a family unit.
The field researcher will assist in identifying and recruiting qualified study participants; perform in-person, in-home interviews with participating survivors; coordinate and conduct focus groups with participants under direction of senior field researcher; assess and refer at-risk individuals for care, and other essential job duties listed below. Researchers must be willing to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, and work from home. Anticipated start date is October 1, 2011, with training prior to the start of the study.
This position will be affiliated with the Cente! r for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) located in Bethesda! , MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CSTS. The Center's work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, military operations, terrorism, natural and human-made disasters, and public health threats. CSTS is a part of our nation% federal medical school, Uniformed Services University (USU), and its Department of Psychiatry, as well as a partnering center of the newly established Defense Centers of Excellence (DCoE) for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury.
Responsibilities:
1. Actively engages in the assigned territory/community in recruitment of qualified participants.
2. Enrolls participants according to DoD informed consent guidelines.
3. Conducts home-based family interviews with research participants (Structured Clinical Interview) in a culturally sensitive manner.
4. Screens for mental health concerns and refers to needed services when appropr! iate.
5. Maintains strict confidentiality of participants, employees, and company information at all times.
6. Responsible for the secure handling and mailing of completed study materials.
7. Responsible for participant monitoring, tracking, and reporting of adverse events.
8. Participates in weekly telephone supervision with Senior Field Researcher and/or Study investigators at CSTS/USUHS.
9. Performs other duties as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work completely independently and in collaboration with field research team and study investigators; Demonstrates sound judgment in solving problems; Strong organizational skills with attention to detail; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to manage work time effectively; Willingness to travel locally, regionally and nationally; Knowledge and experience in working with bereaved adults and children (especially survivi! ng families of sudden, traumatic deaths) Understanding of military occu! pation, culture, and experience;Ability to be objective during structured interview; Solid clinical assessment and referral skills; Experience conducting family interviews and working with children; Knowledge of child development; Good rapport building and relationship skills; Ability to work with many different civilian and military groups and has a flexible nature; Perform other tasks as required.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: B.S. or B.A. in social work, nursing, psychology, or related field. Master's Degree preferred.
Minimum Experience: A minimum of two (2) years work experience in a clinical or research environment performing clinical interviews with vulnerable, high-risk groups.
Required Licenses. Certification or Registration: Documentation of grief, loss and trauma continuing education and training preferred. Must have a clean and valid driver's license.
Work Environment: Home setting. Must ! have access to transportation.
