Participating in the improvement of Medical Care services in a hospital setting has become an ever widening area of knowledge.

It not only includes specialized care/units but requires a complex level of knowledge of diseases and e! arly recognition of untoward effects/outcomes.

Come be an improvement catalyst as a Performance Improvement Specialist (PI Specialist) in maintaining and improving care to our Veterans.

A position exists for a Performance Improvement Specialist (PI Specialist), VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS), with primary responsibility to the medical department, inpatient and outpatient, with its various subspecialties as well as coverage for oth! er related areas as well

As part of the PI team, the PI Specia! list will work with other PI team members to promote continuous survey readiness throughout the VAMHCS and in their assigned areas.

The PI Specialist provides guidance, consultation, direction, and expertise to management and staff in the areas of performance improvement and adherence to accreditation/regulatory standards in all environments of care within their assigned areas.

The role includes the use of QI tools for analysis and reporting.

The PI Specialist is responsible to the Director, Performance Improvement and Accreditation.

This position is stationed at Baltimore but travel to other VAMHCS sites and VISN is required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC

REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a ! State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. If not licensed, applicant scheduled to take the NCLEX.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and/or

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit t! he certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA a! long with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

MasterÂ's degree in nursing and/or related field is required or completing

Master's degree in one year will be considered

·

At least five years of increasing complex nursing practice with

documented performance improvement activity is required

·

Participation in survey readiness preparation is required

·

CPHQ certification preferred

·

Experience and knowledge of medical clinical care areas is preferred

Additionally, the candidate must be knowledgeable concerning:

The organization and administration of multifaceted healthcare delivery systems;

Adult learning theory and principles;

·

Database management concep! ts and principles;

·

Accreditation standards;

·

Epidemiology concepts and principles;

·

Evaluation techniques and methodologies including statistics and statistical process control methods;

Analysis methods and display of information;

·

Group process, Team development and membership;

·

Total/Continuous Quality Management concepts and principles, applications and methodologies; and

·

Be able to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with professional,

administrative and technical staff at all levels to ensure quality of work

Candidates selected to interview will need to provide a writing sample with graphics to the interview panel.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to t! he following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Develop! ment, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;

Professional Development: performance, education/career development;

Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;

Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
