What You Will Do:
General Summary
Under direct supervision, perform non-invasive diagnostic testing with various pieces of equipment (electrocardiograph, holter monitors, and treadmill).
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Performs various non-invasive diagnostic tests on patients as directed by the Cardiologist, suc! h as, electrocardiograms (ECG's), stress tests and holter reco! rdings as stipulated by the physician in accordance with departmental procedures/protocols.
A. Explains procedures to patients to help eliminate fears/concerns and interviews patients to obtain required medical information to ensure safety during procedure.
B. Applies 24-hour holter recordings by placing electrodes on appropriate areas of the patient's body, making proper adjustments to ECG equipment including baseline adjustments and changes to the placement of electrodes on the patient in order to obtain the best recording as required.
C. Observes appropriate safe work practices while working with patients and equipment.
D. Identifies and classifies arrhythmias. Advises the physician or supervisor of irregular or acute heart arrhythmias.
E. Maintains patient medical records in an orderly fashion.
2. Operates and maintains cardiology equipment in accordance with standard operational procedures. Cleans and sterilizes ele! ctrodes and other cardiology equipment according to policies and procedures.
A. Checks for malfunctioning equipment. Makes minor repairs, replaces or contacts service personnel to maintain equipment.
B. Applies cleaning/sterile techniques essential for optimal operation of the equipment.
C. Notifies supervisory personnel of malfunctioning equipment.
3. Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel while providing patient care, discussing methods and patient condition and while performing procedures, respectfully.
4. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations by using CPR or contacting appropriate nursing, medical personnel as required.
5. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability t! o assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his ! or her age-specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
6. Attends and participates in in-service training and various educational programs for professional growth and development. Keeps up-to-date on changes in the field.
7. May assist the receptionist and other support staff with routine office duties, as needed.
A. Answers telephones, assists or directs callers.
B. Schedules patients for cardiology procedures.
8. Performs related duties as required.
What You Need to Be Successful:
1. Completion of a high school level of course work with attainment of a high school diploma or a state High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) is required. Course work in Biology, Chemistry or Physics is required.
CPR certification is required.
2. A minimum of one year health care experience, assisting with ECG's, the application of holter monit! ors, treadmill operations, or equivalent, is required.
3. General knowledge various routine diagnostic cardiology testing procedures, medical terminology is required. Knowledge of cardiology equipment, such as, ECG's, stress system, scanning equipment, holter recordings, treadmills and blood pressure cuffs.
4. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.
5. Ability to stand and walk, each approximately 50% of the time in the process of operating equipment.
6. Ability to lift patients and equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. (with a! ssistance), up to 50% of the time in the process of performing various ! tests.
7. Ability to push/pull equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. in the process of moving equipment to different locations within the hospital.
8. Ability to work with patients possessing potentially infectious disease using the appropriate "Universal Precautions" and other relevant safety procedures.
9. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work with physicians during monitored procedure and to explain procedures to patients.
