Works at designated barbershops as part of MedStar Health Hair Heart and Health Program to provide
screening, education and navigation services for t! hose barbershop clients with high blood pressure,
prediabetes or diabetes. Requires a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the assigned barbershops and
works with Program Manager to determine the best possible schedule to maximize patron enrollment and
outreach. Requires late afternoon and evening work several days a week and 6-8 hours each Saturday as
needed to accommodate the needs of the program.
Qualifications
Education: High school graduate or GED; some college preferred. May require 1 year of technical or
specialized training.
EXPERIENCE: 1 year experience in a customer oriented medical or public health/community/wellness
setting.
LICENSE/CERT/REG: Certification or license as a Nursing/Medical Assistant or Practical Nurse, or a
Community Health Worker preferred.
Skills: Exhibits excellent and oral communication and customer service ! skills. Good knowledge of
interviewing and recording ! techniques. Competent in use of internet and computer-based technology
including MicroSoft Office. Ability to use standard office/medical equipment (i.e. typewriter, personal
computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, fax, copier, sterilzing equipment, blood
pressure curr, OR tables). Working knowledge of the preparation, comparison, or checking of reports, records
and related data; and, basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of thei application.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Administers surveys to program participants.
Assists in completion of Medicaid/DC Alliance application if participant does not have health insurance.
Assists participants in identifying a primary care provider if they do not have one and setting up appointments.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department
! policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation
regulations.
Documents data of participants in the REDCap database.
Educates program participants on self-care behaviors to manage hypertension and diabetes.
Follows program procedures as outlined in the manual of operations.
Follows-up with participants regarding action plans and follow-up on navigation (insurance, provider,
education, other).
Obtains consents from barbershop clients to participate in the program.
Participates in conferences, departmental meetings, and continuing education, as needed.
Performs blood pressure and finger stick blood glucose measurements and measures height and weight of
program participants.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Recruits barbershop patrons with high blood pressure and/or diabetes into MedStar Hair Heart and Health
program.
Seeks opportunities to develop and advance kn! owledge base in areas of hypertension and diabetes and to
educate the participants in self-management skills to better manage their disease.
Works with the Community Health Program Manager in coordinating and implementing programs held in the
community to include: participating in the development of program materials, recruiting and consenting of
participants, teaching classes, communicating with staff at the various program sites, documenting progress,
and preparing progress and activity reports.
REPORTS TO: Community Health Program Mgr
SUPERVISES: No direct reports.
