This position is located in the Department of Perioperative Medicine (DPM). DPM is responsible for providing anesthesia and surgical services to actively support the mission of the Clinical Center. The DPM provides service and support for approximately 2000 surgical cases per year. The CRNA resolves complex anesthesia and anesthesia-related care problems by request or assignment by staff anesthesiologists. Care is rendered to children and adults with complex pathologies. The CRNA is part of the Clinical CenterÂ's ready work force. Â"Ready work forceÂ" means that any member of this Department will be available for reassignment and capable of assuming other CRNA care responsibilities in the event of staffing requirement.
The Department of Perioperative Medicine is seeking to fill a Nurse Anesthetist position. The ideal candidate will posses! ses the following: Graduate of a Nurse Anesthesia educational ! program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and have passed the certification examination administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. Emergency essential employee. DUTIES:
The CRNA is responsible for administering anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures undertaken in the operating rooms as well in satellite locations in the MRI suites, in radiology, and medical and surgical intensive care units.
The major duties of the CRNA include but are not limited to the following:
Administers all types of anesthesia using general, regional and monitors anesthesia care techniques. Such techniques include intravenous, intramuscular, rectal, spinal, epidural or inhalational method! s (such as the use of endotracheal techniques and respiratory support by means of ventilators) for patients of all ages undergoing minor or complex surgical or diagnostic procedures.
Performs and documents pre-anesthetic nursing assessment and evaluation of the patient. After consultation with the anesthesiologist, may request consultations and diagnostic studies and selects, obtains, orders and administers pre-anesthetic medication and fluids.
Checks the surgical schedules in order to set up appropriate anesthetic equipment, sterile trays, drugs, materials and solutions required and anticipates the need for operating table attachments, monitoring devices, blood transfusion accessories, and other special equipment.
Implements corrective measures for intraoperative anesthesia complications by providing airway management, administration of fluids and medications, using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques, and communicating emergent ev! ents with the responsible anesthesiologist.
Assess post-anesth! esia follow-up status as determined by responsible anesthesiologist. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements :
Education : Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Registration : Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment. No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.
ANESTHESIA EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
You must have graduated from a course of study for nurses in anesthesia o! f at least 18 month's duration that was accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) for the year of graduation.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of Nurse Anesthetist experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: collaborating with physicians and anesthesiologists on experimental theories and new developments in anesthesiology to address complex health care problems not susceptible to treatment by accepted methods; collecting research data per protocol; administering general, regional and monitored anesthesia; detecting and treating unfavorable reactions to anesthetics and other agents; operating and maintaining state-of-the art anesthesia equipment and techniques; preparing reports, presentations and classes for health professionals; applying laws and regulations concerning patient's rights and privacy, such as t! he Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 ! and Privacy Act.
